Cold Warning in effect for:
  • Whitehorse
A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.

What: Wind chill values of minus 45 to minus 55.

When: Now through tonight.

Where: Whitehorse, Teslin, Kluane Lake, Champagne Landing, Watson Lake and Cassiar Mountains.

Remarks: An Arctic ridge of high pressure is bringing very cold conditions to southern Yukon. Light winds combined with frigid temperatures will produce extreme wind chill values as low as minus 55.

Some moderation of temperatures is expected today but colder conditions are again expected tonight. Some improvement in conditions is expected heading into the weekend.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected.

What: Wind chill values near minus 45.

When: Today and tonight.

Where: South Klondike Highway and Haines Road.

Remarks: An Arctic ridge of high pressure is bringing very cold conditions to southern Yukon. Strong winds combined with frigid temperatures will give extreme windchill values.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
